Sorry to hear about your crows.

The cage above was created by one of our members after a season of battling Kestrels. Click on the detail photos to see if you can adapt this plan for your housing.

I am having a terrible time this year with crows grabbing my baby martins. Have had houses for at least 20 years in St Petersburg, FL and never had this problem before. Is there anywhere I can purchase a cage or get plans to build one?

Don't give up yet. You still have time to attract purple martins to your site assuming you have appropriate housing that is located at least 30' from the nearest tree that is taller than your martin housing.

Adult martins have already arrived in your area and started nesting. However, the Second-Year birds (those that hatched last year) are just now arriving in the area and will be looking for nesting opportunities. As a landlord who has not had martins in the past, it would not be unusual for you to fail to attract the earliest arriving adult martins since they usually seek older, established colonies.

Most new landlords start their colony with the young birds that arrive later. It may be helpful to place a small amount of nesting material, such as pine needles or small pieces of dried palm fronds in each compartment. Just enough to cover the floor area may be a great help. Good luck!

This is a an imporant issue. I wish to know how he gets it to work when with his moveable (Up & Down) gourds.

Please contact him. I truly need to know exactly how this is done.

Im in Orlando. I never had Martins before. Do you believe it is too late to get any p.martins. Ive been playing the dawn song and I still have no one dedicated to my site as yet.

This is the south. So we are the first to get martins. If I have no martins by now what chances are left. That is why I asked.

One of the most common reason Martins stop using housing is the growth of nearby trees and landscaping. When small trees grow to big trees they become hideouts for predators.

Also check the link to an article by the Purple Martin Conservation Association at the bottom of our page on << Attracting Purple Martins >> for more useful information.

We have had purple martins for 11 years and we are so sad that for two years now they have not returned. We live in New Smyrna Beach,FL and are perplexed as to why? Can anyone living near us have an answer.?
                                         Thanks, Ginny
